DOE Reviews Energy Conservation Standards for External Power Supplies(New!)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is examining current energy conservation standards for External Power Supplies (EPS). As defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), an “external power supply” is an external power supply circuit that is used to convert household electric current into DC current or lower-voltage AC current to operate a consumer product. In 2014, the DOE published the Level VI efficiency standard, which has been in effect in the U.S. since 2016.

New Regulation in China for Room Air Conditioners

Since 2005, China has been promoting energy efficiency with its GB (“Guo Biao”) national standards, setting the scope, parameters, and prescriptive test limits for products ranging from household appliances and flat-panel televisions to luminaires/ballasts and automotive parts. On December 31, 2019, China officially published a new GB national standard pertaining to room air conditioners. GB 21455-2019 sets the minimum allowable values of energy efficiency and defines the energy efficiency grades for room air conditioners.

ENERGY STAR Computers Version 8.0 Final Draft

The Final Draft Specification and Test Method for ENERGY STAR™ Computers Version 8.0 were released on September 10 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Considering stakeholder feedback while maintaining balance among criteria, the Version 8.0 specification anticipates an effective date of July 15, 2020.

ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2020 Proposal

On August 7, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy held a webinar to propose recognition criteria across product categories for the ENERGY STAR® Most Efficient 2020. As an extension of the ENERGY STAR brand, the Most Efficient label recognizes the most efficient products among those qualifying for ENERGY STAR in a given year. The Most Efficient label helps to guide environmentally conscious early adopters toward the most energy efficient products, spanning 14 product categories and 2811 models.

The intent of this program is to recognize smart home system packages that save energy while delivering both cost savings and convenience.

California Energy Efficiency Regulations for Computer Monitors

The California Energy Commission held a webinar on April 17 to review upcoming Title 20 regulations effective for computer monitors offered for sale in California and manufactured on or after July 1, 2019. With more than 25 million computer monitors in the state, regulating their energy use will save about 696 gigawatt-hours per year.

On April 12, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a webinar to review Draft 1 of Version 1.0 of ENERGY STAR Smart Home Energy Management Systems (SHEMS). The intent of this program is to recognize smart home system packages that save energy and deliver cost savings and convenience by providing reliable vacancy detection, limiting standby power of connected devices, and providing users feedback on the energy impact of their settings. The key concept is that smart devices plus occupancy information plus automated services equal energy savings.

Changes Considered in ENERGY STAR Computers Version 8.0 Draft 1

The standard for ENERGY STAR Computers is under revision, and on April 16, representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a webinar with stakeholders to discuss proposed updates in Draft 1 of ENERGY STAR Computers Version 8.0. According to the EPA, market penetration for desktop computers is currently 52% and for workstations 21%. As such, the EPA is proposing more stringent ENERGY STAR criteria for desktop products, consolidating desktop categories, reducing base allowances, and adjusting adders and mode weightings based on more recent data. For workstations, the EPA plans to maintain the existing energy requirements from Version 7.1.

Over 100 student teams from 18 countries around Asia Pacific and the Middle East gathered in the mid-30 °C heat in Kuala Lumpur from April 29 to May 2 for the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2019. The team sponsored by Power Integrations, Team Dagisik UP from University of the Philippines, completed a successful campaign by reaching 95 km/kWh efficiency, second best in team history, with a battery-powered concept vehicle built from scratch. The experience competing on an international stage also laid a solid foundation for the team’s future.

More than 100 student teams and the ultra-efficient vehicles they devoted the last few months to build will hit the track at the Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur on April 29 for Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2019. Sponsored by Power Integrations, Team UP Dagisik from University of Philippines Diliman is hoping that the combination of a newly designed car and a veteran driver can bring home the team’s first title since 2015.
